Elito Revé Y Su Charangon are a much-loved Cuban powerhouse of popular dance music. And have been for 49 years! Elito’s father, Elio Revé Matos, an outstanding figure in Cuban music, founded the original Revé y su Charangón in 1956, his son Elito taking over the band on the death of his father in 1997.

Many of Cuba’s musical luminaries that we know and love served apprenticeships in the original Revé orchestra. Amongst them Chucho Valdés who went on to form Irakere, and Juan Formell, who, along with Pupy, went on to form Los Van Van, two groups who were pivotal in laying the way for the wonderful Timba explosion of the nineties.

Under Elito’s leadership El Revé has grown from strength to strength, deservedly achieving it’s position as one of Cuba’s top bands, much loved by Cubans and Europeans alike, with a distinctive, exciting and highly popular sound. A sound which, for the most part, is built around Changüí, the thrillingly infectious predecessor of Son Montuno and Salsa that has its origins in Cuba’s Eastern provinces.

This driving rhythm is skillfully mixed with Afro-Cuban elements, and their own spicy contemporary Timba flavor. And has produced some mighty anthems, driving Cuban dancers delirious with joy over the years. I can promise you, you will have been on cloud nine dancing your socks off to some, if not all, of them: Agua Pa’ Yemaya; Mi Amiga Chi Chi; Esa Soy Yo; Mi Salsa Tiene Sandunga; El Jala Jala; No Me Da La Gana; El Nombrecito; ¿De Que Estamos Hablando?; 1999; Fresquesito; Se Sigue Comentando; El Teléfono – the list goes on and on!

Make sure you are there at the Live Cuban Event of The Winter to enjoy this incredible band live for the first time in London. It will be a magical night.

Biography

ELITO REVE Y SU CHARANGON

Orquesta Reve, commonly known as ‘El Charangon de Elito Reve’, is a music legend in Cuba and a worldwide famous. The Orquesta Reve was founded in 1956 by Elio Reve, a brilliant musician from Guantanamo, who died in 1997. Today his son, Elito Reve, ensures the musical direction of the band.
Many of the musicians and singers currently in the forefront of the Cuban music scene, have been members of Orquesta Reve. In more than half-century of history, the Orquesta Reve was not only an incomparable orchestra of popular dance music, but a laboratory from which derived other orchestras, other innovating and successful musical formulas. For instance one can cite Ritmo Oriental, Los Van Van, Dan Den, Pupy.
When in the middle of the Fifties Elio Reve settles with Havana, he decides to form an orchestra of the Charanga type with the intention of modernizing the traditional Changui.
Probably the biggest intuition of this brilliant Guantanamero was to conceive Changui as an open musical genre which could be influenced by other musical forms or rhythms (changui-shake, changui- pachanga, changui- guaguanco, changui – timba).
Its relation with Changui was extremely creative and successful. Its music, today like yesterday, is the happy expression of a creative synthesis between tradicion and innovation.
This is confirmed by the success of the tours that the Charangon undertook through various times,in Europe,Peru,Canada,United States,Japan and in West-Africa.
Today the Charangon is in a very successful phase nationally and internationally, at the top of its popularity, especially after the awards won in 2008 in Cuba and in France for its recording “Fresquecito”. In 2011 Orquesta Reve soared to new heights with the CD “De que estamos hablando”, which won both Best Contemporary Dance Album and the Cubadisco Grand Prize marking the first time in Cubadisco history that this prize was awarded to a timba group.
In 2013 the band celebrates 57 years and continues to be as good, and as popular, as it’s ever been.
